Can I learn Neigong online? The truth explained in full

There is a common argument in the Neigong and internal arts world. It states that genuine practice cannot be transmitted online. That without direct physical presence, real transmission is impossible. That online students are essentially wasting their time.
As someone who spent close to a decade living and training in China — studying under masters in two authentic Daoist lineages and completing a five-year doctorate in Chinese Medicine at Shanghai University — I understand where this argument comes from. Furthermore, I partially agree with it.
But only partially.
Here is my honest assessment of what online Neigong training can and cannot do — and why the model I offer goes further than most in-person schools in resolving those limitations.
What Online Neigong Training Cannot Do Alone
Let’s address the real limitations first.
Physical correction is harder online. In traditional lineage training, a teacher feels your body, senses your Qi, and makes direct adjustments. They can tell immediately whether your Dantian is engaging, whether your structure is aligned, and whether energy is moving correctly. This level of feedback is genuinely difficult to replicate through a screen.
Transmission has a depth that requires presence. The highest levels of Neigong involve a quality of transmission that is most powerful in person. This is not mysticism — it is simply the reality that two people sharing the same physical space share an energetic environment that a video call cannot fully replicate.
Underlying health issues can limit progress invisibly. Without clinical assessment, a student may practice diligently for months and feel they are making little progress. However, they may not realise that an underlying health imbalance is creating a ceiling on what their practice can achieve. As covered throughout these posts, approximately nine out of ten practitioners have health conditions that limit internal development. Without clinical assessment these remain invisible.
These are real limitations. Any online teacher who denies them is not being honest with you.
What Online Neigong Training Can Do — And Does Well
Having acknowledged the limitations honestly, here is what online training genuinely offers.
Authentic methods reach people they never could before. For most of history, genuine Neigong training was only available to those fortunate enough to live near a qualified teacher or willing to travel to China. Online training removes that barrier entirely. Students in Australia, the United States, Europe, and beyond now have access to methods that were previously out of reach regardless of their commitment or sincerity.
Daily guided practice beats occasional in-person classes. Many in-person Neigong schools meet once a week or less. In contrast, online students practice daily with structured guidance. They build consistency and depth that sporadic attendance cannot match. In terms of total hours of quality practice, a committed online student often surpasses a casual in-person one significantly.
Foundational work transmits very well online. The core practices — seated Neigong meditation, standing postures, Qigong movement sets, breathwork, and lifestyle guidance — can be learned and developed to a high level through careful online instruction. These foundations are not superficial. For most students they represent years of meaningful, health-transforming work.
Community and ongoing support sustain practice. Our private Discord community provides daily access to guidance, feedback, correction, and connection with other practitioners worldwide. Furthermore, this ongoing support structure is something many in-person schools simply do not offer between classes.
How This Model Goes Further Than Most In-Person Schools
This is where I want to be direct about what makes this approach genuinely different — and in several important ways, more powerful than standard in-person teaching.
Quarterly In-Person Treatment and Correction Events
Every three months I run live in-person events specifically designed to address the real reason most Neigong students plateau. The reason is almost never poor technique. It is underlying health problems and energetic blockages that practice alone cannot resolve.
These events combine:
- Neigong-specific acupuncture adjustments — targeting the precise meridian and organ imbalances limiting each student’s development
- Tuina and hands-on treatment — directly working the channels and tissues to open what has become stuck or depleted
- Practice review and correction — assessing each student’s development and refining their method where needed
In my clinical experience, the vast majority of stuck students are training correctly. However, their body cannot yet respond fully because chronic health conditions, depleted Kidney energy, Qi stagnation, or nervous system dysregulation are creating a ceiling. This is where having a Doctor of Chinese Medicine who is also a lineage-trained Neigong practitioner becomes genuinely transformative.
I identify exactly what is blocking each student’s progress. I treat it directly with acupuncture and Tuina. As a result, students return to their practice with the internal obstacles removed. The progress they make in the weeks following these events consistently exceeds what months of practice alone produced.
No other online Neigong school in the world offers this combination. It is the primary reason students here advance faster and more deeply than at most in-person schools.
A Clinical Foundation Most Neigong Teachers Don’t Have
I hold a five-year Doctor of Chinese Medicine degree from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine — one of China’s most respected institutions. Furthermore, I have worked alongside Master Zhou Gan Sheng for over a decade, sitting beside him through thousands of treatments across international medical seminars.
This clinical background informs every aspect of my teaching. When I design a training progression, recommend lifestyle changes, or adjust a student’s practice, I draw on a depth of medical knowledge that is rare in this field. Most Neigong teachers — online or in-person — simply do not have this combination of lineage transmission and clinical training.
Neigong-Specific Acupuncture Adjustments
Most students who struggle to feel Qi, develop their Dantian, or advance beyond a certain level are not failing because of poor practice. They are being held back by underlying health imbalances, blocked meridians, or constitutional patterns that practice alone cannot fully resolve.
A student with severe Qi stagnation, depleted Kidney energy, or chronic nervous system dysregulation will hit a ceiling regardless of how diligently they train. Acupuncture and Tuina targeted specifically at these patterns — informed by an intimate understanding of what the student is trying to achieve internally — can unlock progress in months that might otherwise take years.
This is not a marketing claim. It is the clinical application of two systems that were always designed to work together.
Who This Model Is For
This approach works best for students who:
✅ Are genuinely committed to consistent daily practice ✅ Want authentic methods from a verified lineage rather than generic wellness Qigong ✅ Are open to addressing the health foundations that support deeper practice ✅ Can attend quarterly in-person events when possible for direct treatment and correction
It is not the right fit for someone looking for a casual weekly class or a purely passive video course.
What Students Experience
“I finally feel Chi — not imagination, real sensation.” “My anxiety and fatigue have reduced dramatically.” “I wish I found this 10 years ago.” “The teachings are life-changing and incredibly rare.” “More calm and clarity than I’ve felt in years.” “NOTHING compares — Rudi is the real deal.”
A Final Thought
The question is not really whether Neigong can be taught online. The real question is whether the teacher has the depth, the clinical tools, and the structure to resolve the limitations that online teaching creates.
I have spent the better part of a decade ensuring that the answer to that question — in this case — is yes.
The combination of daily online training, a global practitioner community, quarterly in-person treatment events, and clinical support from a Doctor of Chinese Medicine creates something that most in-person schools simply cannot match. It offers the convenience of online learning with the depth and clinical support of traditional face-to-face transmission.
