How to Catch a Fake Qigong Master — Everything You Need to Know

Let’s start with something important. Most people teaching Qigong or Neigong are not deliberately fraudulent. Many are sincere, well-meaning, and genuinely believe in what they teach. Some have real skill at the level they have reached. A few are genuinely exceptional.

However, the internal arts world also attracts a particular kind of character. This is the person who discovered that appearing mysterious and spiritually advanced generates income, admiration, and devoted followers surprisingly well. In the age of social media, the gap between appearing powerful and actually being powerful has never been wider.

So here is a lighthearted but honest guide to spotting the signs. Not to make you cynical — but to save you years of wasted time and money.

☯️ Sign 1: They Only Demonstrate on Their Own Terms

A genuine practitioner with real internal development can demonstrate it under reasonable conditions. Not necessarily on demand in the middle of a supermarket — but certainly in a normal training environment with people they haven’t personally pre-selected.

The fake master, however, has very specific requirements.

The energy must be right. Students must be properly prepared. Circumstances must align favourably. Mercury cannot be in retrograde. Furthermore, the next demonstration will happen at the upcoming seminar, which is unfortunately sold out, but you can join the waitlist for £300.

Real skill does not require this level of atmospheric preparation. Therefore, if someone can only demonstrate under conditions they personally curate and control, that pattern is worth noticing.

😤 Sign 2: Simple Questions Make Them Inexplicably Angry

Ask a genuine master a straightforward question — how something works, where they trained, what lineage they come from — and they will usually answer directly. They will also acknowledge what they don’t know.

Ask a fake master the same question and watch what happens.

Suddenly you are being spiritually defensive. Your ego is blocking the transmission. You are disrupting the group’s energy. Additionally, your question reveals a fundamental misunderstanding that unfortunately cannot be addressed today, but could be explored in next month’s advanced workshop.

Legitimate expertise is never threatened by honest questions. So if a simple question about credentials produces a disproportionate emotional reaction, that reaction is usually telling you something important.

📱 Sign 3: They Talk About Their Abilities Far More Than They Show Them

Internal arts culture has always valued humility around claims. Consequently, genuine practitioners tend to understate rather than overstate what they can do. They understand how complex and variable internal development actually is.

The fake master does not share this concern.

You will hear a great deal about their extraordinary sensitivity, their rare transmission, their secret training under unnamed masters in remote locations, and their special connection to the lineage. You will also hear about the remarkable experiences their students have in their presence.

What you will see considerably less of is actual demonstration.

Moreover, when demonstration does happen, it tends to occur with the same carefully chosen participants, in the same carefully controlled setting, producing the same carefully curated outcomes.

Which brings us neatly to the next point.

⚡ Sign 4: The Impressive Videos Are Not What They Appear to Be

This one is important and worth understanding clearly.

You may have seen videos online of practitioners emitting Qi — often called Faqi — causing visible physical reactions in students. Shaking, falling backwards, involuntary movement. It looks extraordinary. For many people encountering it for the first time, it genuinely appears to show unusual power.

Here is what you should know. Some of these demonstrations involve a significant degree of assistance that nobody explains to the viewer.

A skilled practitioner working with a properly prepared student can guide a genuine energetic experience. However, the same demonstration with a random unprepared person often produces considerably less dramatic results. This is because the student’s preparation, suggestibility, and internal state do a large portion of the work.

There is a meaningful difference between these two things:

A) A practitioner with genuine Faqi ability who has spent decades cultivating real internal power and can produce verifiable effects under reasonable conditions with a variety of people.

B) Someone who has learned how to work a crowd, select the right participants, and create conditions for a response that looks far more extraordinary than it actually is.

Both can produce visually similar footage. Nevertheless, the difference becomes apparent when you change the conditions.

This is not a reason to dismiss all such demonstrations as fake. Genuine Faqi exists and genuine practitioners possess it. However, it is a reason to look carefully at who demonstrates, under what conditions, with whom, and whether the same results appear consistently outside their home environment.

🎭 Sign 5: Long-Term Students Don’t Actually Improve

This is the most reliable test of all and requires nothing more than observation over time.

Does the teacher’s approach actually produce genuine results in students? Not dramatic experiences at seminars — but real, stable improvement over months and years. Better health. A calmer nervous system. More genuine internal awareness. Improved energy and vitality.

A system that works produces results. It does so consistently, across different students, and over time.

A system built primarily on image and charisma tends to produce a different kind of result. It produces deeply loyal students who feel special for belonging to something exclusive. Yet their actual internal development remains surprisingly limited despite years of devoted practice and significant financial investment.

This is perhaps the saddest outcome. Not the fraudster who knows exactly what they are doing — but the sincere teacher who has convinced themselves and their students that something extraordinary is happening, when in reality very little of substance is being transmitted at all.

🌿 A Final Note

None of this means you should approach the internal arts world with blanket suspicion. Genuine teachers exist. Genuine transmission exists. Real internal development produces real results in real people.

The best protection is simply this. Look for consistency over time. Look for humility rather than grandiosity. Furthermore, look for teachers whose long-term students become genuinely healthier, calmer, and more capable — not just more devoted. Look for credentials you can verify and lineages you can research. Additionally, look for someone who answers honest questions without making you feel spiritually inadequate for asking them.

And if someone’s demonstrations only ever happen exactly on their terms, with exactly their chosen participants, in exactly their chosen environment — ask yourself why that might be.

Real skill tends to travel better than that.
